Sports & Wellness

Lots of joie de vivre
The protected position of the Mar Menor and its shallow waters, which hardly allow the formation of waves, make this lagoon an ideal place for all kinds of water sports: sailing, surfing, kiting, water skiing, canoeing... In addition, the Mediterranean coast offers magnificent diving sites, even for cave divers!
On land, the offer of tennis, soccer, cricket, rugby, golf (resort), hang gliding, parasailing, horseback riding, biking, karting, hiking, wellness, bird watching, museums... provides plenty of variety.
Spa treatments, especially with the particularly mineral-rich alkaline mud, which are recommended for various skin diseases, rheumatism, arthritis, gout and after bone fractures, are offered especially in the salt flats of Lo Pagán (San Pedro del Pinatar). However, the mud appears in many places on the beaches of the Mar Menor, where bathers can try it on their own.
Not to forget the typical local festivals, musical events and, last but not least, the numerous bars and restaurants that invite you to feast, celebrate and relax.
For those who want to get to know the area, the excursion tips can provide some initial pointers.
Excursions

A real must is Cabo de Palos with its lighthouse located on a hill, which can be climbed and offers a wonderful view of the Mediterranean Sea and the Mar Menor. You should not miss the fishing port of Cabo de Palos and enjoy the freshly caught delicacies from the sea in one of the many harbor restaurants!
La Manga itself is about 3/4 passable by car, from the south (Cabo de Palos) to the largest channel that separates the nature reserve of the salt flats and wetlands of San Pedro de Pinatar from the rest of La Manga. This area must be approached from the north.
Cycling tours around the Mar Menor with its towns Santiago de la Ribera, Los Narejos, Los Alcázares, Los Nietos and Los Belones are highly recommended, since the area is well equipped with bike paths. In addition, it is possible to use paths that are impassable by car. Between the largest port of La Manga, Tomás Maestre, and San Javier, there is a ferry, so that shorter tours or excursions can be easily planned.
From Cabo de Palos, a route full of contrasts leads through the Calblanque Natural Park, a stretch of land almost completely in its natural state, via Los Belones to the mining mountains with their Cartagena-La Unión mining area, which has been exploited since the time of the Phoenicians in Spain and has been completely abandoned since 1990. A visit to the mine La Mina Las Matildas north of La Unión is also recommended. It has been lovingly restored and has been equipped with an educational trail since 2013.

Maybe you also feel like visiting one or the other bigger city? Don't miss a visit to Cartagena, which is over 2200 years old and whose bay served as an important port for Greeks and Phoenicians centuries before. Evidence of construction dates back to Roman times, to which the name of Cartagena can be traced (Carthago Nova - the new Carthage). Subsequent reigns of the Byzantines, Arabs and the rich Spanish history have left their architectural traces everywhere and shape this lively metropolis by the sea.
More inland to the north is Murcia, the capital and cultural center of the region of the same name, a vibrant university city whose history dates back to the Arabs and whose architecture bears witness to an equally rich history.
However, if you just want to enjoy and relax, then enjoy an extensive breakfast in the marketplace of Los Belones...
